Twice a year I head to New York City for the NY NOW, a wholesale trade show in Manhattan. My favorite part is reconnecting with my friends and customers who come from all over the continent to attend. I love talking to other makers about their process, and the challenges they face. Its also exciting to have the opportunity to see their amazing products first-hand. Booth neighbors really make the show fun and this time around there were a couple new ones whose work I was excited to meet.
I usually check out my booth neighbours online before heading to the show and was excited to meet Anna and Sarah of Tactile Craftworks. They make beautiful leather journals, clutches and flasks laser etched with vintage maps in their Milwaukee, WI studio. We happily geeked out about lasers during the show. Lasers are amazing, guys.
My set-up is pretty intense (cutting boards weigh a ton!) so I was super jealous when Emilie, of The Golden Cleat, rocked up with her beautiful (and feather light) pillows and jewellery. She’s based in Thousand Islands, NY where she makes her nautical inspired line. I went home with a Lake Ontario Map pillow and a pair of silver cleat earrings which I adore. Booth buddy score A+.
I met Claudia Vallejo last year and always look forward to spending time with her while I'm in New York. She's a wonderful woman and an incredibly talented jeweller from Bogota, Columbia. I have several of her pieces and get so many compliments when I wear them out. My favourite, and a piece I wear nearly everyday is a laser-cut (I love lasers) stainless steel cuff based on a pre-Columbian ceramic stamp. She has amazing new necklaces made from coal and resin, and beautiful geometric earrings and these fantastic pieces that clip onto your clothing. I need it all.
It was great to get out of my wood shop and meet so many lovely new people. I'll be updating my retailers section soon with all the fantastic new shops I picked up at the show!
